Your Questions About Back Pain

John asks…

back pain!?

I’ve recently started getting really bad lower back pains. its hard for me to get up in the morning, get up from a sitting position, even bending over to pick up or feed the cat. Other women at work have been telling me it could be the weight in my breasts. I’m 30 years old, if it is why would it start hurting now? and why would it be my lower back not my upper. Seriously I’m 5’1 and DD cup…i’ve seen bigger. I don’t think thats what it could be, but what do i know? If someone could give me an idea or if they could help me out on how to ease my pain it would be greatly appreciated. Serious answers please….i’m in pain. :(

admin answers:

You are right, even if your breasts are larger than they should for your size, they will cause upper back pain and not lower back pain.

You have irritated your sacro-iliac joints (lots of people call them your hip joint). This joint is the first joint that moves if you bend, get out of bed and generally all activity using your lower back.

As it is a joint that has no disc, it does become inflamed easily and can therefore cause a lot of uncomfortable pain.

These joints usually become irritated when your pelvis becomes out of balance. Which can occur from prolonged sitting, minor falls and even just day to day life with all the bending lifting and twisting.

Don’t worry it is nothing serious.

To change it you need to relax the muscles that support the pelvis that may be tight, you need to strengthen the muscles that will be weaker (this does not mean going to the gym, it means improving nerve and blood supply). This should settle things quickly if it is minor. If it doesn’t then you need to change the joints in the pelvis which you can do at home easily.

But do the muscles first as this is the easiest and most likely cause. For the stretches just go to http://www.back-pain-advisor.com/back-solutions-masters-course.html for a free e-course on the necessary exercises.

Ruth asks…

Back pain?

I hurt my back today, oddly enough while sneezing really hard, and am now having a hard time standing up straight, walking…basicially moving. It has been progressily getting worse thruought the day. From compensating for the pain that is located in the center bottom of the small of my back my muscles on the sides all around are starting to ache. (I have a 7 month old daughter so avoiding pain is virtually impossible :) What could be wrong? Is it something that will go away with rest or should I see a doctor? Are there any remedies that might help me get through the night? I’ve tried ice packs, heat and stretching… Thanks for your help!

admin answers:

I have been experiencing back pain for many years now and have managed the pain successfully for about a year now. What i found to work was actually a very simple process. And it is also something i did not see in any of the other answers i have seen. Ones answer suggested heat for 10 minutes. Yes you alternate it with ice packs first heat to relax the muscle. Then ice for 10 to reduce inflammation. Then take an over the counter ibuprofen. You can take up to 800mg four times a day. Also you should lay on the floor and exercise the back muscles by slowly bringing your knees to your chest. Do this a few times. Then lay your legs flat. Bring your bend your right leg into a four shape on the floor and slowly twist your upper body to the left as far as you can. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Then do the same thing on the left side. The object to to stretch the lower muscles. But do not rush the exercising. You do not want to over stimulate your muscles. And finally when you go to bed at night rest lay on your side and lay a big pillow under you leg bring your knee level with your side. This relieves excess strain on your lower back muscles. If this dose not work after a few days of trying you should consult your doctor for further treatment. I hope this advise helps you my friend and god bless.

Richard asks…

BACK PAIN!!!?????????????

Hello everyone,
I was hoping you could help me. I am 19 and have been having really bad back pain, I have been having it for the past year. I went to my doctor and she told me to exercise and i have been for the past year, i even started yoga. My back will hurt throughout the day and especially when i wake up in the morning. I don’t know what to do, there are times when it gets really pain full it puts me on the verge of crying. What should i do??? I am also eating healthy, and drinking plenty of water but still the pain comes and goes. Please help:(

admin answers:

Yeah, this is one that yoga cannot help. You have a pain that is coming from a pinched muscle and it needs to be released so you can be pain free again. To do so isn’t that hard, just follow this exercise:
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg or even over it if you can, the more over the better it is. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.

Chris asks…

back Pain ?

Is it normal to get back pain after $ex, I usualy feel a slight pain in my lower back it lasts for few hours and disappears.

admin answers:

As we grow older our muscles start to weaken unless we keep exercising them, especially if we have a desk job.

For us men we rely a lot on our lower back muscles for our sexual activities. With the pleasure that we would be getting, we tend to override any lower back pain while we are having sex. Hence, we could be straining our lower back muscles to the point where it could become a chronic pain.

My advise to you is to check with your doctor to make sure that the pain you are experiencing is nothing serious. Then you should start strengthening your lower back muscles through regular exercising, e.g., walking, swimming, etc. You could also ask your doctor for any other exercises you could do to strengthen your back in general.

Good Luck!

Because of this fact, more than 80% of the patients are not able to find the actual reasons of their back pain.

The following are primary lower back pain causes that affect millions of people all over the world every year.
1) Muscle injuries The most back pain cases happen due to overuse and unnecessary stress on the back muscles. Repetitive actions which consist of back muscles and our spinal cord can affect the back muscles in the long term and can lead to lower back pain in most cases. Lifting heavy weights without prior preparation or warm up exercises can also cause extreme stress on back muscles. Human vertebrae and spinal cord can be dislocated in cases where person do not take proper precautions while lifting very heavy loads. Repetitive twisting motions while carrying heavy loads can also affect the performance of our lower back pain in the long run.

2) Disc herniation Sciatic nerve present below the spinal cord can be damaged due to constant disc degeneration and herniation. This can lead to sciatic pain which is just another form of excessive lower back pain. Change of position of discs present in the spinal cord can lead to extreme inflammation in the lumber nerve roots. This causes radiculopathy and affects lower back area badly resulting in the extreme back pain.

3) Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is one type of health disorder which consists of internal bone fractures. This bone fracture can be happened due to loss of minerals and bone density which is needed to strengthen the bones in human body. This can lead to fracture of vertebrae in most cases. Acupuncture for Back Pain

Acupuncture for Back Pain – Is it a viable alternative?

Studies have proven that acupuncture for back pain may actually be a viable alternative to western medicine. In fact, one of the most surprising results of studies about acupuncture for back pain is that the acupuncturist doesn’t even have to puncture the skin to achieve results. This result has led to further investigation into how acupuncture actually works. Some doctors claim that it is simply the placebo effect at work, while others wonder if there is an underlying cause to acupuncture’s positive results. In studies involving acupuncture , acupuncture usually led to up to 65 percent of patients feeling positive results and showing an improvement in their daily lives. Such a high percentage can hardly be attributed to the placebo effect.

Before undertaking an acupuncture for back pain treatment, it is important to pinpoint the cause of your chronic back pain. The most common cause is a simple sprain or strain on your back. Herniated or pinched discs in your vertebrae may also be a source for severe back pain. A common cause of back pain in older patients is sciatica, pain that is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, not all chronic back pain is the same. Some pain comes from deficiency, some from stagnation, and one type of pain is due to a disorder known as cold damp obstruction. Deficiency-type back pain is the dull kind of pain that gets better after resting your back. This is the kind of chronic back pain that afflicts older patients. Stagnation pain is the kind of back pain that is sharp and stiff. It can get worse by resting your back. This kind of pain is usually caused by putting undue strain on your muscles. Pain from cold damp obstruction is worsened by cold weather or by excessive humidity. Heat helps this kind of pain go away.

Acupuncture will usually involve needles both at the site of the pain, and on points that are not close to the focus of the pain. Patients are often surprised by needles at distal points (far away from the source of the pain) when they first visit their acupuncturist. The treatment may also include electricity and using suction cups on specific spots. The pain will not usually go away after the first session. Studies have shown that acupuncture for back pain treatments are a good long-term solution, but may not give immediate, fast results.  It is not uncommon for your traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to prescribe traditional herbs to improve blood circulation and recovery. Acupuncture for back pain may achieve better results with sharper kinds of pain, but the treatment may have to be altered to solve chronic problems underlying some cases of back pain.

Lower Back Pain Causes: Why Do Some People Have Low Back Pain While Others Dont?

Lower back pain is one of the more common types of pain out there, ranging from a dull ache to being unbearable. But what exactly causes lower back pain? The most common cause of back pain is simply overdoing it. If you use the right muscles too often, or get them injured, back pain is inevitable. This is why so many laborers get lower back pain, especially those that do a lot of lifting. Make sure to give your muscles a chance to rest and recover every now and again, and to follow OH&S policies like lifting with the knees.

pain in backPinched nerves are a also a common cause…

Another common cause of pain is excess pressure on nerve roots in your spinal canal, otherwise known as “pinching a nerve”. This sort of pressure can be brought upon in a number of ways, including repetitive motion, sudden strain to your lower back, the effects of osteoarthritis and other conditions that typical become more problematic with age, a vertebra defect such as spondylolysis, and fracturing from extreme force such as an accident. Some of these are simple enough to fix, such as repetitive motion: just stop doing the motion. Otherwise, consult your doctor. Compression fractures are also a possible cause of back pain, especially among people with osteoarthritis and people with long-term corticosteroid use.

Some dangerous uncommon causes for your pain

Common causes of back pain are usually easy enough to deal with, but there are some more uncommon and dangerous causes. Bacterial infection, spinal tumors, Paget’s disease, all manifest back pain as a symptom. Don’t be afraid to consult your doctor if you suffer from lower back pain.

Remember that one of the best ways to make sure that back pain doesn’t become chronic is to stay positive. If you’re depressed or under a lot of stress, this mental state will effect the amount of pain that you feel. Aside from staying positive, make sure not to aggravate your back, and if the pain persists consult a medical professional.

Need lower back pain help? Pain relief tips for your back.

The thing about the human skeleton is that it’s not really designed for us to be walking upright. Looking at a model of the human spine, it’s easy to see that most of the padding of the disks between the vertebrae is located at the front. This padding is designed for a creature on all fours. Hence our chronic back pain. However, many back problems can be avoided or healed by proper biomechanics  that is, by proper movement and posture.

Causes of Back PainGood posture is the key to reduce back pain!
Most people have horrible posture when they are standing or sitting. Due to a culture of computers and television, we have gotten used to leaning forward a bit over a keyboard, or slumping on a couch, which curls our shoulders and our upper back in and down. This tightens the muscles of the upper back and shoulders, and thrusts the neck forward. To compensate for our neck being thrust forward, we tilt our head up or back. This posture puts us out of alignment, and leads to chronically tight back and neck muscles. To improve posture, imagine that there’s an invisible line between the navel and the sternum, and try to keep this line straight rather than crumpled. This straightens the back, which straightens the shoulders, which pulls the neck upright, which puts the head back into alignment. This simple trick will help solve many chronic back pains, and will protect the body as we age.

Practice keeping your spine straight.
This trick fits with the most basic advice about protecting the back from injuries: always try to keep in a straight line the head with the neck, the neck with the shoulders, the shoulders with the back, the back with the hips, the hips with the knees, and the knees with the ankles. When our body forms a straight line in this way, the back does not have to compensate for an unnatural body positions. This rule of thumb for back health is why, for example, we should “lift with our legs, not with our back”. When we bend from the waist instead of from the knees, there is very little in a straight line any longer, and all the pressure is put on the back.
